South Carolina is open for business
South Carolina is open for business and reaching out to international representatives with their plans for economic development and growth. Secretary Lightsey promoted economic opportunities for individuals and businesses through the various initiatives of his department. As a national leader in foreign direct investment, South Carolina extends its global reach with various international offices that help existing companies in developing new export markets. The Department of Commerce works with businesses, universities, communities, and the Nation's workers to promote job creation, economic growth, sustainable development, and improved standards of living for everyone. There are several areas of cooperation that could be explored between South Africa and South Carolina.
Our visit to Martin Luther King Junior National Historic Site
Consul General of South Africa Motomisi Tawana and South African Chamber of Commerce in the USA President Mr. Neil Diamond paid their respects at the Martin Luther King Jnr Memorial site in downtown Atlanta. The South African delegation visited the MLK precinct, museum, and Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King and his father before him held sermons. There were close ties between Dr. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu, and all three were recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Atlanta Mayor’s Office of International Affairs
The Atlanta Mayor’s Office of International Affairs hosted Consul General of South Africa Motomisi Tawana and SA Chamber USA President Mr. Neil Diamond at City Hall on November 30, 2022. The Mayor’s Office for International Affairs recently merged with immigrant affairs to develop and foster relationships with Atlanta’s international community, economic development partners, government agencies, and academic and cultural institutions to position Atlanta as a global hub for commerce, innovation, education, culture, and diplomacy. The South African Delegation shared information on the South African diaspora in Georgia and the importance of establishing strong relations with the city of Atlanta as a global connection point of business and commerce. Paulina Guzman, the Deputy Director for Diplomacy shared the key projects of Mayor Andre Dickens's Administration including working with international stakeholders on women empowerment and youth development.
Global Atlanta
Consul General of South Africa Motomisi Tawana and SA Chamber USA President Mr. Neil Diamond received a special welcome from Trevor Williams at the offices of Global Atlanta. Consular Conversations is a series of monthly interviews hosted by Global Atlanta with diplomats in Georgia. The objective is to raise the consuls’ profile and help Atlantans understand their countries better for the purposes of business and cultural exchange. The South African Delegation shared insights with Trevor on South African cultural diplomacy and the bilateral trade between the two countries. South Africa is the largest trading partner of the US in Africa. South Africa as a key international stakeholder will be featured in the 2023 lineup of Global Atlanta's Consular Conversations.
